Oldies Man Rockin'

By MARY HUHN
May 6, 2005  -- "Just because it's old, doesn't mean it's an oldie," says Allen Hill, the maniacal leader of The Allen Oldies Band.

Which means you won't hear Billy Joel or Eric Clapton when the jumpin' Houston covers act hits Maxwell's (1039 Washington St., Hoboken,; (201) 798-0406) tomorrow.

Instead, you'll get hook-filled, high-spirited tunes from the '60s hit parade-- such as the McCoy's "Hang on Sloopy," the Swinging Medallions' "Double Shot (of My Baby's Love)" and Wilson Pickett's "Mustang Sally."

Onstage, Hill arms himself with props like a jar of peanut butter and a steering wheel.  He's also fond of tossing lacy underthings to the audience-- just so the crowd can throw them back during his inspired take on Tom Jones' "What's New Pussycat."

Joining the Farfisa-organ drenched seven-piece band for its East Coast debut will be a special guest known only as "Teen Idol."  The mystery saxman is infamous for duct-taping a beer holder to his horn.

"We're playing all night," Hill says.  "It's gonna be nuts."

For several years, they've been shaking tail feathers of fans at the South by Southwest Music Festival- stealing the thunder of indie rockers with their outdoor shows in front of Rue's Antiques.

The dance party begins at 10.  Admission is only $5, so slap on your dancing shoes and cross that river for an oldies baptism.
