Allen Oldies Rocks Boldly

By MARY HUHN

June 9, 2006 -- WHAT a terrible week. Paris Hilton unveiled her manufactured single and then David Lee Roth strutted for Jay Leno with a bluegrass band to perform "Jump" from the new disc, "Strumming with the Devil: The Southern Side of Van Halen." Check YouTube and feel my pain.

The dismal week was saved by "Rescue Me," whose violent ending was tempered by a backdrop of the Twilight Singers' "Bonnie Brae."

Old media darlings Radiohead and new darlings Arctic Monkeys perform this week, and they are way sold out - but don't fret. Live music everywhere, beginning with the wildest show in Tahoe: the Allen Oldies Band.

This oldies act isn't really from Tahoe - it's Houston - but they are wild. Last year the band played Maxwell's in Hoboken for five-plus hours - without taking a break. It was one of the greatest nights of Playlist's life.

Fronted by the tireless, tux-clad Allen Hill, they pour through hand-clapping hits from the '50s and '60s, such as "Double Shot," "Peanut Butter" and "Maybelline." His "What's New Pussycat?" must have caused several impromptu marriage proposals by now.

You have three chances to catch the East Coast return of this Southwest wonder: Tonight at Maxwell's (1039 Washington St., Hoboken, N.J.; [201] 798-0406); tomorrow at Southpaw (125 Fifth Ave., Park Slope, Brooklyn; [718] 230-0236); and tomorrow afternoon at the Big Apple BBQ at Madison Square Park at 23rd and Fifth Ave.
